TRAINING

The acquisition of competencies, clinical and cognitive skill development with the requisite attitudes, linked with practical experience, are essential components of Eye Care Trainings undertaken at Lighthouse. In order to graduate, students are expected not only to have the requisite knowledge, but to be able to apply it, and to attain competency in clinical skills.

Students learn best through practical experience as this enables a direct application of skills and knowledge to the real world. Practical experience, however, does not just mean spending some time in a hospital or clinic and hoping that skills will be somehow absorbed. Lighthouse focus on acquiring these skills through practical application in the clinical setting and active participation in service delivery and providing patient-centred care at all stages of the clinical pathway. Only through undertaking carefully planned practical sessions with trained supervisors, who are also aware of expected competencies, This makes students attain competencies

Lighthouse for Christ Eye Centre is a king pin of eye care training along the Kenyan coastal region, we network with other teaching institutions in the country even abroad. Just but to name a few UK Southampton University, Locally we work together with The University of Nairobi and all medical training colleges in the country.

The medical equipments, instruments and the environment available at lighthouse provides a good atmosphere for learning. The big spacious theatre, several operating microscopes, laser machines and other state of the art machines put lighthouse on peak for intensive and proper transfer of skills in eye care.

We offer training at various different levels as illustrated below

TRAINING OF 1ST AND 2ND ELECTIVE REGISTRAR

 OPTHALMIC NURSES

Kenya Medical College also sends ophthalmic nurses to lighthouse for 4 weeks to have an experience in the field.

PRIMARY EYE CARE TRAINING- Ophthalmic Skills Upgrade Course

Lighthouse for Christ Eye Centre trains Ophthalmic Skills Upgrade Course, The course is tailored very well to meet the demands of trainees by giving them an exposure of a government set up by liaising with the coast General Hospital, and The trainees also get varied experiences from all the ophthalmologists in the coastal region since they teach them. REPORTS FROM ELECTIVE STUDENTS FROM KENYA AND INTERNATIONAL

MBARARA UNIVERSITY OF SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

DEPARTMENT OF OPHTHALMOLOGY

The Head of Department
Ophthalmology, MUST
Dear Sir,

FEEDBACK REPORT ON DR CHARLES UMESUMBU SHAKU’S ELECTIVE TERM AT LIGHT HOUSE FOR CHRIST/MOMBASA
Introduction
The department of ophthalmology of Mbarara University of Science and Technology has organized electives for his second year residents and I got an opportunity to do a one month elective placement at Light House for Christ/Mombasa from 5th August to 03rd September 2012, under Christian Blind Mission (CBM) Sponsorship. Below is my report.
Objectives

Main Objective

To be converted from Extracapsular cataract surgery with large incisions (ECCE) to small incision cataract surgery SICS.

Specifics ObjectivesTo be involved and participate in all clinical and surgical activities done at Light House for Christ/Mombasa
To have a hands on experience in patient management and surgery at Light House for Christ/Mombasa especially Children.
To learn the use of other facilities that we do not yet have at MUST like Humphrey Perimeter, I care Tonometer for Children, Phacoemulsification…
To create a link for further training like Phaco and even polish again my SICS.
Activities
I have done:
? In Theatre (Main Hospital and outreach):
- 27 SICS
- 3 Conj excisions with rotating conjunctival flap
- 3 Incisions and curettage of chalazion
And 1 Corneal Scleral repair with Iris repositioning
? In the Clinic
- Every day I had my slit lamp and could see more than 30 patients if I was not in theatre and I could use all the tools in front of me: B Scan, I care tonometer…
? In Outreach
- We have seen almost 300 patients in 2 days with my mentor Prudence (I like to call her professor), a cataract surgeon who led me into my conversion to small incision cataract surgery.
I have seen:
- Nice surgeries done (phacoemulsification, non filtering surgeries in glaucoma: use of Ahmed valves, Molteno, pediatric surgeries…),
- People really worshiping God and associating Jesus Christ at Work; this was amazing to me (Morning devotional, bible study, thanks giving…I felt at home.
I have learned:
- The use of manual keratometer (At Ruharo - Must we are having automatic Keratometer)
- The use of phoropter in refraction
- The use and interpretation of results with Humphrey Perimeter
- That all our common surgeries can be done without admission of the patients, all of them being out patients (Light House doesn’t have a ward) and I haven’t seen any problem even with my own
cases! This can make real revolution in ophthalmology for some people who are still struggling with and fighting for more spaces.
- To compare fields experiences, all having the same objectives: provide an accessible better service with minimal equipment but, each team has his own realties.
- How people can seriously, with all commitment, work as a team with the love and Joy that only Jesus Christ can give.
